Radiology is the eye of modern Medicine, the Centrepiece and Hub of Medicine and Dentistry. The Department of Radiology, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria has been in existence since the creation of the then Institute of Health in 1969, with Radio-oncology (Radiotherapy) coming on board in 1995.The department has since been involved in rendering specialist radio-diagnostics and radiotherapy services, research and training of Medical Students and postgraduate Resident doctors.
The Radiology Department in Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria has witnessed tremendous growth in the past 11 years when the Federal Government of Nigeria through its VAMED project upgraded the Department with the provision of state of the art radiologic equipment including a CT scanner, MRI scanner, Fluoroscopy and mammography unit, C-arm X-ray and a mobile X-ray. These equipment in addition to the conventional X-ray and ultrasonography machines made it one of the reference Radiology Centers in the country. The cobalt-60 equipment with the remote after-loading brachytherapy machines enable us render oncology services in the hospital.
From a Department with no academic staff in the 80’s it now boasts of 17 academic staff (1 Professor/Consultant, 3 Readers/Consultants, 3 Senior Lecturer/Consultants, 6 Lecturer 1/Consultants and 4 Lecturer 11) and 40 Postgraduate Resident Doctors in various stages of training. The department also enjoys the services of a visiting Professor/consultant Radiologist.
In the area training, the department trains undergraduate medical students and Postgraduate resident doctors every year using high tech equipment at our disposal. The department boasts of a building with departmental library, also has seminar rooms for lectures/tutorials and offices for members of staff.
However, the Department is facing challenges such as Ageing high tech equipment and the need for upgrading/replacement and Lack of sufficient office accommodation.
